From the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on earth, to surging shorelines and anywhere in-between, we make the impossible possible through our continuous passion for innovation.

Our people design, engineer and manufacture technologies that are enabling our customers to discover, navigate, measure, detect and communicate in the toughest environment on earth: Our oceans. We’ve been actively developing the technology to make the oceans accessible for over 50 years and we’re only just getting started… At Sonardyne, we value different ways of thinking. Whether you think in code, patterns, systems, or steps, your unique perspective is important to us.

We are looking for a talented and curious Applied Scientist to join our Acoustic Signatures team, helping us better understand, model and predict the acoustic behaviour of underwater systems and environments.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong foundation in physics, mathematics or engineering who enjoys solving complex real-world problems through a combination of scientific analysis, simulation, experimentation and software development.

The Role

As an Applied Scientist, you will contribute to the development of innovative acoustic technologies and modelling techniques that support Sonardyne’s world-leading subsea products and systems.

Working alongside scientists, engineers and technical specialists, you will investigate acoustic phenomena, develop analytical and simulation models, analyse experimental data and help translate scientific understanding into practical engineering solutions.

You’ll have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, from fluid dynamics and acoustic propagation through to the development of advanced predictive tools and algorithms.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Applying scientific principles to understand and model underwater acoustic signatures and behaviours.
  • Developing and maintaining analytical and computational models using Python and other appropriate tools.
  • Supporting the design, execution and analysis of experiments and trials.
  • Processing and interpreting complex datasets to derive meaningful insights.
  • Producing clear technical reports, documentation and presentations to communicate findings.
  • Contributing to simulation and modelling activities that support product development and innovation.
  • Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate scientific research into practical applications.
  • Delivering smaller engineering and research projects from concept through to completion.
  • Keeping abreast of developments in acoustics, fluid mechanics, simulation techniques and related scientific disciplines.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • A degree (2:1 or above) in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or a related STEM discipline.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Understanding of fluid mechanics and associated physical principles.
  • Experience producing technical reports and communicating complex concepts clearly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • A curious mindset and enthusiasm for scientific investigation.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in a relevant STEM subject.
  • Experience of acoustics, sonar systems or acoustic devices.
  • Experience developing simulation tools or numerical models.
  • Knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Programming experience in C++.
  • Experience planning, conducting and analysing real-world experiments.
  • Familiarity with scientific data analysis and visualisation techniques.

Why Sonardyne?

At Sonardyne, you’ll be working on technology that genuinely pushes the boundaries of what’s possible beneath the ocean surface.

You’ll join a team of world-class scientists and engineers who are passionate about innovation, collaboration and solving technically demanding challenges. Every project offers the opportunity to learn, contribute and make a meaningful impact on products used across the globe.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • Annual bonus scheme
  • Generous pension contribution
  • Private medical insurance
  • Life assurance
  • Professional development and training opportunities
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • On-site parking
  • A collaborative and innovative working environment
