Designed to work in transition and surf zones down to less than 1 m water depth, or in land-locked areas such as lakes and rivers, TZ Transceiver improves the speed, accuracy and efficiency of positioning seabed marine seismic nodes and cables, enabling the positioning of thousands of nodes or cable in parallel with laying and shooting.

TZ Transceiver is compact, simple to fit and easy to operate, making it the ideal choice for shallow-draft workboats, RHIBS and unmanned surface vessels (USVs). Onboard, the splashproof (normally surface-mounted) transceiver electronics module is cabled connected to your PC equipped with our HydroPos software (or third-party software) and remote acoustic transducer.

The remote transducer is normally attached to a rigid pole and deployed over the side of the craft you’re using. A GNSS receiver is typically attached to the top of the pole but, aside from that, there’s no need for any other ancillary equipment, such as a gyro or attitude and reference system, and the complexities that integrating them would involve.

On command from your PC, the TZ Transceiver acoustically interrogates up to nine Type 7815 or up to 95 SST 6 transponders at a time and the acoustic responses are used to generate range measurements to each of them. By combining the many acoustic range measurements made to each transponder, with GNSS data input into HydroPos, it is possible to generate accurate positions of all transponders to better than 1 m absolute precision.

TZ Transceiver comes in two variants, depending on your operational requirements. Where you’re extending your land survey into a shallow water area, such as a lake or river, our HF (High Frequency) option could be the option for you. It works with our Type 7815 TZ/OBC transponders and Lightweight Release Transponders (LRTs).

Where you’re operating offshore and need to extend you survey up to the shoreline, our MF (Medium Frequency) option could offer you the flexibility you need. It works with our 3,000 m rated Small Seismic Transponder 6s (SST 6s) and Release Transponder 6s (RT 6s), which, being part of our 6G family of hardware, are compatible with our Ranger 2 Ultra-Short BaseLine (USBL) positioning systems.

This means you can extend your deeper water vessel-based surveys seamlessly into shallow water zones using the same transponders. Just send out a workboat, RHIB or USV to cover those shallow areas for you.

Mounting TZ Transceiver onto a USV means these vehicles can follow the mother vessel autonomously and position the nodes or cable as they are being deployed. Or it can be tasked to perform a position verification check to ensure the cables or nodes have not moved, perhaps after bad weather. It’s a cost-effective force multiplier, eliminating the need for an additional manned vessel that would otherwise be required to conduct the same routine operations.
