From the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on earth, to surging shorelines and anywhere in-between, we make the impossible possible through our continuous passion for innovation.
Our people design, engineer and manufacture technologies that are enabling our customers to discover, navigate, measure, detect and communicate in the toughest environment on earth: Our oceans. We’ve been actively developing the technology to make the oceans accessible for over 50 years and we’re only just getting started… At Sonardyne, we value different ways of thinking. Whether you think in code, patterns, systems, or steps, your unique perspective is important to us.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and technically curious Acoustic Engineer to join our Electromechanical Design Group. This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate or early-career engineer who is passionate about acoustics, data analysis and engineering innovation.
Working as part of a small, multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the design, testing and continuous improvement of advanced underwater acoustic products used across offshore energy, ocean science, autonomous marine systems, maritime security and defence applications worldwide.
This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with acoustic testing, prototype development, technical investigations and data-driven engineering, while learning from experienced engineers in a highly collaborative environment.
What you’ll be doing
As an Acoustic Engineer, you will:
- Carry out acoustic testing activities and interpret measurement data to support product development and performance evaluation.
- Develop practical tools and methods that enhance laboratory testing capabilities and improve engineering effectiveness.
- Support the design, development and evaluation of prototypes against internal specifications.
- Investigate new acoustic designs, technologies, manufacturing approaches and engineering processes to improve product performance and reliability.
- Analyse acoustic and electrical test data to identify trends, diagnose issues and provide insights that inform engineering decisions.
- Develop and enhance software tools, scripts and automated processes that improve the speed, consistency and quality of testing and analysis activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, repeatability and robustness across engineering workflows.
- Contribute to transducer development through technical investigations, prototype evaluation and performance testing.
- Collaborate with experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams to solve complex technical challenges and support product development programmes.
- Communicate findings, recommendations and improvement opportunities clearly through reports, presentations and technical discussions.
What we’re looking for
We’re seeking an individual who enjoys problem-solving, working with data and applying engineering principles to real-world challenges.
Essential
- Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Acoustics, Data Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex technical data.
- Experience using software tools for data processing, visualisation, reporting or technical analysis.
- Understanding of structured testing methodologies and engineering problem-solving techniques.
- Interest in process improvement, technical innovation and continuous learning.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- A proactive approach with excellent attention to detail.
Desirable
- Experience gained through university projects, placements or industry roles involving engineering testing, laboratory activities or technical investigations.
- Exposure to data analysis tools, scripting or automation techniques.
- Experience supporting prototype development or experimental work.
- An interest in improving engineering processes, efficiency and repeatability through automation and data-driven approaches.
Why join Sonardyne?
At Sonardyne, you’ll work alongside talented engineers developing technologies that are trusted by customers around the world. We offer an environment where innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement are encouraged, and where early-career professionals can build meaningful technical experience while contributing to products that solve real-world challenges.
You’ll gain exposure to a diverse range of applications across:
- Offshore energy and renewables
- Ocean science and research
- Autonomous underwater and surface vehicles
- Maritime security and defence
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in acoustic engineering, transducer technology or advanced marine systems within a globally recognised technology organisation.
Additional Information
- Based at our Blackbushe facility.
- No regular travel requirements.
- No offshore training or medical requirements.
- No direct people-management responsibilities.
If you’re excited by acoustics, engineering innovation and the opportunity to contribute to technologies used beneath the world’s oceans, we’d love to hear from you.
