Harnessing ADCP data from SPRINT-Nav and Syrinx

SPRINT-Nav and Syrinx DVL both have ADCP capability. This guide provides a concise overview for users of both instruments on accessing, viewing and exporting the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data collected by their instruments.

The primary software tool provided for this task is Origin Viewer

Origin Viewer is Sonardyne’s ADCP data visualization software, compatible with any product featuring ADCP capability, including SPRINT-Nav and Syrinx DVL, as well as our Origin 65 and Origin 600 ADCPs.

It can be installed on both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Accessing stored data

You can access collected data in two ways:

  • Load a single file: Select the “file” option to view data from one specific file.
  • Load a directory (mission): Select the “mission” option to load a folder of data. Origin Viewer will concatenate and decimate the files to provide an overview of the mission.

Once loaded, the heat map and metadata components can be zoomed in or out to resolve the data up to the captured resolution.

Key visualisation features

Origin Viewer provides a simple interface to inspect various types of ADCP data:

  • Heat maps and slices: View heat maps of ADCP data, such as water velocities and back scatter intensities. Heat map data can also be viewed as individual depth slices and time series.
  • Metadata: The top plot displays metadata, which can include parameters like temperature, heading, pitch or roll.
  • Transformations and masking: You can transform the velocity data between frames of reference.
  • The “mask beyond bottom” feature allows you to blank out data below the seabed.

Streaming and logging live data

Origin Viewer can connect directly to a device to handle live data streams:

  • Streaming: Select “stream”, input the required settings and connect. The heat map will populate immediately with data.
  • Logging: Data streaming from the device can be logged to local storage (logging) simultaneously with streaming. This logging runs in the background and is useful for preventing the device’s internal storage from filling up.

Exporting data

You can export data directly from Origin Viewer:

  • CSV Files: Select “download CSV” to save data as a comma-separated variable file.
  • Snapshots: Hit CTRL S to automatically save a snapshot of the screen to your downloads folder.
