From the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on earth, to surging shorelines and anywhere in-between, we make the impossible possible through our continuous passion for innovation.

Our people design, engineer and manufacture technologies that are enabling our customers to discover, navigate, measure, detect and communicate in the toughest environment on earth: Our oceans. We’ve been actively developing the technology to make the oceans accessible for over 50 years and we’re only just getting started… At Sonardyne, we value different ways of thinking. Whether you think in code, patterns, systems, or steps, your unique perspective is important to us.

Are you a hands-on engineer with a passion for technology and the water?
We’re looking for a versatile Manufacturing Test Engineer & Vessel Operator to join our team at Sonardyne. This unique hybrid role blends marine operations (40%) with manufacturing test and applications engineering (60%), offering variety, travel, and the chance to work on cutting-edge subsea technology.

No prior vessel experience? Don’t worry—full training will be provided in towing, launching, and operating vessels.

If you join, you will be:

On the water – Supporting engineering trials and calibration activities across the UK and occasionally Europe. You’ll tow, launch, and operate vessels (up to 3.5 tonnes)—with comprehensive training provided to get you confident and competent.

Onshore engineering – Supporting production testing, running in-house calibrations in our test tanks, and contributing to applications engineering projects, particularly around our SprintNav product line.

Safety & compliance – Upholding the highest standards of safety in vessel operations, transport, and engineering environments.

Technical support – Using your electronics and systems knowledge to fault-find, test, and validate equipment.

Ideally, we’re looking for someone with:

  • A background in electronics, systems, or manufacturing test engineering (HNC or equivalent).

  • Practical experience with diagnostic fault-finding and test tools (Scopes, DVMs, power supplies, etc.).

  • Competence in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) and the ability to interpret technical data (drawings, diagrams).

  • A valid UK driving licence with B+E entitlement (training can be arranged if required).

  • A strong focus on safety, teamwork, and adaptability.

  • Willingness to travel extensively, with occasional overnight stays.

It would be a bonus if you had:

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 (with commercial endorsement).

  • Experience in marine trials or supporting scientific/engineering operations.

  • Familiarity with Sonardyne or similar marine technology systems.

  • First Aid at Sea or STCW certification.

Why Join Us?

At Sonardyne, we’re known for innovation and excellence in subsea technology. In this role, you’ll have the rare opportunity to combine engineering expertise with hands-on marine operations, making every day different. Whether in the workshop, on the water, or out in the field, you’ll be part of a collaborative, safety-driven team working on projects that push boundaries in navigation and positioning systems.
