We offer the possibility of working on software, hardware and systems which are used in an exciting and technically challenging environment. Sonardyne provides underwater acoustics, inertial navigation, optical and sonar technology.
In the role of System Test Engineer you will have the responsibility of integrating different hardware and software components and performing functional tests of the systems and their components.
The integration, verification and validation activities take place in our head office of Blackbushe in air and test tanks. The majority of products will also be tested dynamically on our trials vessels which are based in Plymouth. With the opportunity to visit customer sites both on/off shore and worldwide.
- To conduct system testing, in line with Company Procedures, for all system ‘components’ i.e. hardware, software, firmware, software tools etc. though the use of air testing, tank testing, sea trials or offshore testing etc.
- To collate, analyse, interpret and maintain system test data, creating written reports, to summarise general results, highlight issues, suggest recommendations and identify action responsibilities.
- To organise sea trials in conjunction with the Plymouth based colleagues, by ensuring the availability of dates, the boat, and equipment and fully support the testing schedule.
- To establish and maintain strong communication channels with hardware, software and firmware specialists across the Company allowing for collaborative working as well as the efficient and timely completion of test tasks.
- To provide regular progress reports, both verbal and written, to the Systems Test Manager on each task as well as at the weekly Department meeting.
To apply technical expertise in support of specific customer situations, both onshore and offshore, including installation of new or specialist systems into the field, hands-on training of customers, demo’s and trialling of new systems to potential customers, delivery of formal training courses or involvement in Customer Support/Survey Group directed activities.
To provide usability feedback via test reports and at weekly department meetings to assist design authorities across the Company to ensure continuous improvement in system and interface design.
To share the responsibility for Customer Support Calls on a rota basis, providing specialist support and advice to customers regarding system and software queries.
To contribute to the continuous improvement of the System Test Team and wider Engineering department through the identification of potential changes and initiatives aimed at increasing productivity, efficiency and improving the overall team and department’s function

Dimensions of the Role:
Team: A member of the Systems Test Team within the Engineering Function. Team currently comprises of 3 Systems Test Engineers and a Systems Test Manager
Staff Responsibility: No direct supervision of staff
Product Coverage: Sonardyne products/systems used in Oil/Gas field development, Ocean Sciences and Maritime Security i.e. LBL / USBL / INS / DVL / AMT’s / Sentinel / NOAS etc.
Travel: Some travel will be required. This will mainly be within the UK, travelling to Sonardyne’s Training and Trials Facility based in Plymouth. There will also be offshore opportunities to provide technical expertise and training to customers world-wide.

Degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Electronics, Hydrographic/Land Survey, Marine Engineering/Technology, Ocean Sciences/ Oceanography, Geophysics or similar.
ISTQB foundation qualification in software testing is desirable
Experience in system testing, software and/or automation of system testing preparation is desirable.
Intermediate user of Microsoft Windows Office Suite specifically programming in Excel
Proven experience of manipulating and interpreting large data files
Technical knowledge of the Marine offshore/inshore survey operations including DGPS, sidescan, multibeam, bathymetry, sub-bottom profiling, USBL positioning etc
Aware of different testing methods e.g. System Testing, Functional Testing, Exploratory Testing, Automated Testing, Compatibility Testing, Regression Testing, Reliability Testing, Usability Testing.
A basic knowledge of Sonardyne products and systems and their application in the different market places.
