Quality Inspector (Mechanical)

To accurately work to quality standards and procedures which are set out in the Company Quality Management System to ensure that mechanical parts conform to drawing/specification requirements (including accompanying certification), are fit for purpose and compliant with applicable standards.
1. To undertake comprehensive inspection of mechanical parts and assemblies from sub-contractors and in-house machine shop using traditional mechanical inspection equipment and 3-axis ABERLINK AXIOM co-ordinate measuring machines (CMM), including the ability to write programs.
2. To coordinate the entire verification process of in-house machined components by using a variety of gauges and tools to confirm that quality standards are being met and that items are ‘right to drawing’. Work tasks are prioritised in a list format on a computerised system and are generally to be followed in chronological order.
3. To identify inaccuracies with component quality and reject/report them in a timely manner. Issues need to be captured on the in-house Observation Report System which is used as an escalation tool highlighting any problems with the appropriate engineer. This ensures that issues caused by such inaccuracies are resolved quickly and efficiently.
4. To carry out Chemical Etching and PMI testing as required
5. To liaise with Suppliers (where appropriate) to resolve quality issues with goods supplied and to undertake Supplier visits/audits as necessary.
6. To ensure that the correct paperwork is accompanying the materials/components being inspected. This will involve checking the corresponding documentation for what certification is required.
7. To undertake checks on coils, cables and battery packs (and potentially other assemblies) as required, including ensuring that there is no visual damage, that the crimp joints (where applicable) and the labelling are correct. On occasion, there may be a requirement to test batteries and simple PCBs. However this will be under supervision until full training has been given.
8. To liaise with design/development engineers, as appropriate, when inspecting prototype parts and assemblies to resolve development issues.
9. To prioritise work from internal Machine Shop and external subcontractors/suppliers. This responsibility sits outside of the automated priority list which includes short notice requests from production control.
10. To perform routine care and general maintenance activities of inspection equipment, ensuring that relevant items remain calibrated within specified requirements.
11. To ensure that the Company’s ERP Electronic Resource Planning (Syspro) system is kept up-todate with the results of inspection activities and that reject notes are prepared and circulated, as required
12. To ensure that all gauges and equipment used for the Inspection/PMI processes are identified and calibrated in accordance with calibration database ‘due-dates’ and that all supporting systems and documentation are updated to reflect the latest calibration status of such equipment’.
13. To conduct all work activities, at all times, in a safe manner in strict accordance with legislation and Company Health & Safety policies and safe working procedures, escalating unsafe conditions or practices to Management for immediate attention and actively participating in promoting a culture of ‘safety first’.
Dimensions of the Role
The Company employs approximately 300 worldwide.
Company Head Office is in Yateley, Hampshire; Regional Sales Offices in Aberdeen, Brazil, Singapore and Houston, Sea Trials Centre in Plymouth and Wavefront (associated Company) in Sherborne, Dorset.
Occasional travel may be required to visit suppliers, test houses etc (vehicle/transport will be supplied).
No budget responsibility.
Educated to GCSE or equivalent standard including Maths and English
Ability to work with a variety of IT packages including Microsoft Office
Proven knowledge of inspection techniques for mechanical parts used in the construction of pressure vessels
Experience of using 3-axis ABERLINK AXIOM CMM (manual and Numerically Controlled) equipment
Knowledge of electrostatic dissipative devices (ESD) requirements is desirable*
Previous experience of working in an engineering/manufacturing environment
*This is not necessarily required for mechanical piece parts but will be relevant on part-assembled sub-assemblies.
