Using an MF HPT Ranger 2 system to track and release an LMF release

Many users of Ranger 2 systems want to use a medium frequency USBL system to command and release LMF releases such as RT 6-6000 and RT 6-HD. This article will explain how, however it’s worth noting that our next Ranger 2 release will remove the need for this procedure.

Notes

  • Using a MF transceiver such as the HPT5000 or HPT7000 in the LMF band will not be as efficient in terms of range performance. The source level of the MF unit is 3🡪 9dB lower than the equivalent LMF unit in this band.
  • Using an MF transceiver to communicate with an LMF beacon is designed for ease of use and compatibility. Although theoretically the MF transceiver will transmit over 7km, it should not be used as a permanent substitute for a dedicated LMF transceiver.
  • HPT3000 (Mini-Ranger 2) is not recommended for use as an LMF transceiver as the transmission power is not adequate at the LMF frequency.
  • It is important to note that transponders should not be changed from their default frequency band.

Steps

Changing an MF transceiver from MF to LMF is as simple as the below, open up a manual command window in Ranger 2 and send the below:

1. Change the transceiver from MF to LMF band by sending the command:
2. FS:U****,TDR,LMF or FS:U****,TDR,MF

Where **** is the UID reported in the FS response.

Usually it is most efficient to send telemetry at a carrier frequency, in the middle of the MF or LMF band. Because we are pushing the transceiver to operate outside it’s normal operating zone, it is best practise to change the MS command to operate at the frequency of the address.

3. Change the MS on the transceiver by sending the following command:
MS:MU1

4. Store the above settings by sending the command:
STR

The address of the transponder used should be considered carefully. For MF transceivers being used to communicate with LMF transponders it is advised that all address used are >17kHz. Therefore WB2 >2301 and WB2+ >5501 addresses. The CIS channels chosen should also be >17kHz >1606 WB2 and >4806 WB2+.

Example
Depending on the Ranger2 variant in use, it may be possible to create multiple jobs. If this is available, it would be best to create separate jobs for MF and LMF beacons.
When using the same job for MF and LMF beacons, the user must be aware that beacons on the opposite frequency band will no longer track until the transceiver frequency is reverted.
If the transceiver is already in a Ranger2 job, use the manual commands User Interface (UI), this can be found: Tools>Advanced>Manual Command

In the example below the UID is 31A8 and the transceiver is being change from MF to LMF. Transmit text is red and Receive text is grey.

Change the telemetry transmit frequency:

Store the setting by sending the command:
STR
>STR:OK
If the transceiver is already added in Ranger 2, use the “Set All” button to reset the HPT, this updates parameters behind the scenes in Ranger2. If the transceiver LED turns blue and gets de-selected for “Use in Tracking” re-tick the box and select “Apply”.

Release transponders using the release button in the beacons table.

When changing the transceiver back to MF from LMF, if the user needs to communicate with MF transponder again, the process above should be reversed.
In the example below the UID is 31A8 and the transceiver is being change from MF to LMF. Transmit text is red and Receive text is grey.
