Sonardyne - Delivering trusted solutions for acoustic positioning, inertial navigation, wireless communications, sonar imaging

Sonardyne’s latest generation of subsea Data Logger Units combines a digital wideband acoustic data link with a package that is ROV-portable. The unit is suitable for either long or short term deployment, being constructed from super duplex steel and the wideband acoustic link enables data files to be uploaded much more quickly than was previously possible.
The package is rated to a depth of 3,000m and has an approximate weight in air of 70kg, reducing to 50kg in water. The data logger has been designed for ease of ROV deployment and tree mounting. A 4-way r 7 way Tronic connector on the side of the data logger may be ROV-mateable or may be connected to a jumper cable prior to deployment. Alternative connectors can be provided at customers’ request.
The Data Logger Unit is capable of interfacing to down hole gauges from all of the major suppliers such as: Schlumberger, Roxar, Well Dynamics, etc. Other manufacturers’ gauges can also be interfaced as required. Several interfacing options exist: • A gauge manufacturer’s single Eurocard, such as those supplied for use in a SEM, can be accommodated within the logger. • The logger can supply power and communicate with a gauge manufacturer’s card located within a separate pod. • Sonardyne can provide a purpose designed interface card, fully integrated with the logging electronic circuits.
The Data Logger Unit is normally fitted with one 4-way or 7 way Tronic connector for connection to gauges or external gauge interfaces.
Logging life is essentially dominated by the battery power consumed by the gauges and interface circuitry each time a measurement is made. Using a standard battery, the life will typically be greater than 2 years if gauges are read only a few times per day but may reduce to a few weeks if gauges are read every few minutes. A double size battery pack in an extended housing is available as an option. Sonardyne can advise on the approximate battery life for any given logging rate according to clients’ individual applications.
Logging intervals can be varied by acoustic command from 1 minute to 7 days. Memory capacity is 256Mbytes. In general, the battery life is a greater constraint than memory size.

| Acoustic Data Link | High Speed, Sonardyne Wideband |
| Acoustic Data Transmission Rate | 600 Baud (True payload rate- raw data rate is 1200 Baud) |
| Data Storage Capacity | 8Mb Standard (Expandable to 16Mb) |
| External Interfaces: Analogue or Serial |
1x Gauge vF 1x Serial Port |
| External connectors | ROV Mateable |
| Battery Storage | 14.5 V |
| ROV Transportable | Yes |
| Mechanical Construction | Super Duplex Stainless Steel |
| Weight in Air | 70kg |
| Weight in Water | 50kg |
| Note 1. The standard 8Mb capacity represents more than 3 years of data storage, at one reading (of 3 gauges) every 10 minutes. For virtually all practical applications, there will be substantial memory capacity left unused at the end of the deployment, as the memory usage life will typically exceed the life of the internal battery pack. | |
